One Team. Four Legs, Two Feet, Endless Heart.

When disaster strikes, every minute counts. In the rubble of collapsed buildings and amid the chaos of natural calamities, a silent yet extraordinary team is hard at work. For over 50 years, the Swiss Association for Search and Rescue Dogs—REDOG—has been at the forefront of life-saving operations, harnessing the unparalleled abilities of specially trained dogs and the unwavering dedication of volunteer specialists.

Founded in 1971, REDOG has grown into a formidable network of around 825  members who volunteer more than 110,000 hours annually. Their mission is as clear as it is urgent: to locate missing persons and victims trapped beneath debris or lost in difficult terrains before time runs out. “A dog’s nose is still one of the fastest means of locating human scent in a large area or in rubble,” explains one of the organization’s search specialists. This natural ability, combined with sophisticated search strategies and cutting-edge technology such as acoustic sensors and imaging techniques, makes the team indispensable in emergency scenarios.

Operating around the clock—24 hours a day, 7 days a week—REDOG’s teams can be mobilized at a moment’s notice via their dedicated emergency hotline. Whether the call comes in during the dead of night or the heat of the day, trained dog handlers and technical experts are ready to deploy into perilous environments. Their operations span beyond Switzerland’s borders, with successful missions in Greece, Taiwan, India, and more recently, in Turkey following the catastrophic earthquake of 2023. In one poignant rescue, a small child was found and reunited with a relieved mother—a moment that encapsulated both the hope and the urgency that drive the organization.

REDOG’s work is not solely defined by its immediate response to disasters. It is equally rooted in a commitment to excellence through continuous training and cooperation with partner organizations. The volunteers participate in regular joint training sessions with the Swiss Rescu Chain, the police, fire services, civil protection and other rescue organizations, ensuring that every operation is carried out with precision and professionalism. These collaborations foster an exchange of knowledge that transcends borders, as REDOG shares its expertise with international search and rescue teams, contributing to the global pool of life-saving strategies.

The integration of specialized teams within REDOG underscores the complexity of modern rescue operations. From technical search specialists tasked with detecting human presence through advanced imaging to area search teams proficient in navigating Switzerland’s challenging pre-alpine regions, the organization has evolved to meet the multifaceted demands of disaster response. In scenarios where lives hang in the balance, the partnership between canine intuition and human ingenuity becomes a beacon of hope.

As Switzerland continues to face its share of emergencies, the story of REDOG remains one of resilience and innovation. It is a testament to the power of volunteerism—a force that, in the face of adversity, brings together communities, technology, and the extraordinary sense of purpose found in every bark and every heartbeat of these remarkable search and rescue dogs.

In an era where seconds can mean the difference between life and death, REDOG’s unwavering commitment stands as a powerful reminder of the profound impact that specialized training, modern technology, and sheer human and animal determination can have in the race against time.
