The Future of Human-Animal Bond from My Vision
Introduction
The human-animal bond is a deep connection that goes beyond species, bringing emotional, psychological, and even physical benefits to both humans and animals. As a veterinarian, this bond has shaped my journey, helping me grow professionally and reinforcing the importance of compassionate, high-quality care. Through my work, I have seen how veterinary medicine plays a key role in strengthening this relationship, allowing pets to live healthier, happier lives with their families.
However, truly understanding this bond comes from personal experience. When a veterinarian has their own pet, they realize that this connection is just like any other human friendship—pure, genuine, and filled with mutual trust and affection.
My Journey in Veterinary Medicine
I am Eyad T.Omar El-Nawawy a 25-year-old small animal veterinarian who got my DVM degree in 2023 from Alexandria University. I have been a pet owner since 2021 when I decided to get a furry companion to experience the human-animal bond firsthand and study feline behavior up close.
From the moment I started practicing small animal medicine, I developed a strong passion for sharing knowledge and teaching others. This led me to create a website dedicated to veterinary medicine, where I shared techniques and insights. However, I soon realized that platforms like LinkedIn offer a wider reach, as many veterinarians prefer quick access to information on commonly used apps. This inspired me to become more active in sharing my knowledge online.
I began my career as an emergency veterinarian, working in the ER for about six months. During that time, I saw the challenges that new graduates face in emergency medicine. To help bridge that gap, I developed a course covering the fundamentals of emergency care, including triage and stabilization techniques, to support new vets in handling critical cases.
In addition, I co-founded the Canadian Veterinary Hospital in Alexandria alongside my mentors, with the goal of providing exceptional medical care while enhancing client education. We share a vision of improving the veterinary community in Egypt, not only through high-quality services but also by sponsoring workshops and organizing student visits. Since our hospital was newly established in November 2024, we have long-term growth plans and are actively seeking partnerships to further develop the Egyptian veterinary field.
Currently, I am working at The Ark Animal Clinic to gain diverse experience and learn from professionals across the country. I am also preparing for the NAVLE exam, as I aspire to work internationally and expand my expertise.
The Veterinarian’s Role in the Human-Animal Bond
Veterinarians play a vital role in strengthening the human-animal bond by ensuring pet health, educating pet owners, and providing support during critical moments.
From preventive care to emergency interventions, every decision we make impacts not only the patient but also the people who love them. We must always remember that, for many owners, their pets are family members, which is why I refer to them as "pet parents." Based on my experience, the human-animal bond is a unique mix of companionship and guardianship. As veterinarians, truly understanding this bond allows us to reflect it in our medical approach, ensuring both pets and their families receive the best care possible.
Promoting Preventive Care
Preventive care—including vaccinations, routine check-ups, and proper nutrition—is essential for keeping pets healthy and active companions. Educating pet owners about the importance of regular veterinary visits and early disease detection builds trust and reinforces the shared responsibility of care.
Our preventive role completes the circle, helping pet owners truly understand and strength the meaning of the human-animal bond. When they take on the responsibility of caring for their pets, they naturally strengthen their companionship. Through this experience, they become more aware of their pet’s importance, benefiting both emotionally and physically from the bond they share.
One of the most challenging yet essential aspects of veterinary medicine is guiding pet families through difficult situations, such as managing chronic illnesses and providing end-of-life care. The emotional support we offer during these moments not only helps families cope with grief and loss but also strengthens the human-animal bond by ensuring pets receive compassionate, dignified treatment.
An important part of our role is providing comfort to others, even when we ourselves need support. This emotional weight is what makes our work so demanding—but also deeply meaningful.
Enhancing Quality of Life
When reflecting on the meaning of life, I believe its true value comes from its finite nature, reminding us to appreciate every moment. While every life will eventually come to an end, our role as veterinarians is to enhance its quality and longevity, providing the best possible care to ensure comfort, dignity, and well-being for as long as possible. Whether through innovative pain management, rehabilitation therapies, or personalized nutrition plans, our goal—even in non-treatable cases—is to optimize comfort and maintain the cherished bond between pets and their owners until the very last moment.
The Future of Pet-Centric Services
As veterinary medicine evolves, so do the services and technologies designed to enhance pet care. Telemedicine, wearable health monitoring devices, and personalized treatment plans are shaping the future of veterinary practice, allowing for more accessible and efficient healthcare solutions. These innovations empower pet owners with knowledge and resources, ultimately deepening their connection with their animals. With AI technologies, veterinarians and pet owners can understand companion animal health faster than ever before, creating new services and diagnostics for more accurate diagnoses and improved pet care. As databases grow and become more accessible, veterinary knowledge will continue to expand, leading to significant growth in the global veterinary market. This, in turn, will drive innovation and improve services, further strengthening the human-animal bond. The future of veterinary medicine is advancing faster than we can imagine, bringing unprecedented changes and opportunities.
My Perspective on Veterinary Medicine in Egypt
The veterinary field in Egypt presents both challenges and opportunities. Economic fluctuations, limited resources, and accessibility issues pose hurdles for both pet owners and veterinary professionals. However, I firmly believe that with continuous education, innovation, and collaboration, these barriers can be overcome, leading to significant improvements in veterinary care.
In recent years, Egypt has witnessed notable progress in its veterinary sector. By embracing new technologies, expanding access to high-quality veterinary services, and fostering a culture of responsible pet ownership, we can further advance the profession. Supporting young veterinarians through educational initiatives and professional development is crucial in building a more sustainable and progressive industry.
The past five years especially have shown promising growth, and Egypt has the potential to become one of the leading veterinary markets globally. With continued investment in veterinary infrastructure and knowledge-sharing, I believe the Egyptian veterinary market will experience remarkable improvements in the coming years, ultimately enhancing the human-animal bond and elevating the standard of care to new heights.
